Dr Peggy Dwyer SC was called to the Bar in 2010 after practicing for more than a decade as a solicitor. She worked for the Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) in NSW and in the Northern Territory, and then the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office, specialising in criminal law and coronial inquiries.
As a barrister, Peggy specialises in medical disciplinary law; inquests, commissions of inquiries and criminal law. She regularly appears for medical practitioners in inquests, Tribunal and Medical Council hearings and criminal proceedings.
She appeared as Counsel Assisting the Royal Commission into the Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse and as Counsel for the Northern Territory ALS in the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the NT.
She is currently the Senior Counsel Assisting the State Coroner in the Inquest into the death of seven persons at the Bondi Junction Shopping Centre, due to be heard this year.
Dr Dwyer was an Associate to Justice Michael Kirby in the High Court of Australia between 1995 and 1996. She was awarded a doctorate from the Faculty of Law at the University of Edinburgh. Her Ph.D. focused on the regulation of illicit synthetic drugs and the precursor chemicals used in their manufacture.
