Associate Professor Anna Holdgate

Senior Staff Specialist / Clinician
Liverpool Hospital

Associate Professor Anna Holdgate is engaged in multiple aspects of Emergency Medicine, including clinical care, education, training, medicolegal work, and NSW Medical Council reviews. She is a senior staff specialist at Liverpool Hospital, where she continues to practice as a clinician in the public hospital system.

Beyond clinical practice, Anna plays a key role in medical education. She teaches local trainees and serves as a senior examiner for the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. Her medicolegal expertise is well recognized, having provided expert opinions for Coroners Courts in NSW, Victoria, and South Australia, with a particular focus on the real-world challenges of medical practice.

As part of her work with the NSW Medical Council, Anna reviews cases involving doctors who have received notifications regarding their conduct, performance, or health.

Despite her demanding medical commitments, she is also known for her ability to fit in extensive travel adventures.

Associate Professor Ben Taylor

Senior Staff Specialist, Emergency and Simulation Staff Specialist
Liverpool and Northern Beaches Hospitals

Ben Taylor is a senior staff specialist emergency physician working at Liverpool and the Northern Beaches Hospitals. He has a special interest in simulation-based medical education. He is a simulation staff specialist at the Sydney Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre and Associate Professor and Director of Simulation  for UNSW, School of Clinical Medicine. He is currently undertaking further study in translational simulation aiming to bridge the gap between simulation, healthcare systems and patient safety.

Dr Jack Marjot

Staff Specialist

Jack is a recently fellowed emergency physician working in tertiary emergency departments across Sydney and providing emergency telehealth support to rural New South Wales. He has an established interest in the intersection between clinical practice and medicolegal issues, having worked with Avant as a trainee medical advisor and now serving as an elected member director on its board. Jack has been closely involved with the HREM conference since its inception, first as a trainee and now as a consultant.

Associate Professor Nicola Cunningham

Emergency Physician and Forensic Physician
St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and Fidelis Forensics

Nicola is an Emergency Physician and Forensic Physician, which puts her right at the intersection of medicine and the law. For almost 20 years, she ran the most comprehensive training program for forensic medical registrars in Australia, introducing trainees to the vagaries of both these worlds. Along with her dual Fellowships, she holds a Master of Forensic Medicine, and a Master of Health and Medical Law, and is completing a Master of Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors. She combines her clinical work with leadership, teaching, research and advocacy in the fields of emergency medicine, clinical forensic medicine, medical ethics, law, and patient safety.

Dr Susan Hertzberg

Senior Staff Specialist & Emergency Physician
Avant Mutual & Prince of Wales Hospital

Susan Hertzberg is an Emergency Physician with over 25 years’ experience in Emergency Medicine. She is also a Senior Consultant Medical Advisor at Avant Mutual, Australia’s largest Medical Defence Organisation. She is a conjoint senior lecturer at UNSW and a senior staff specialist at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney and has been extensively involved in training junior doctors.

She been a member on various committees at the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine as well as Local Health District and local hospital committees. She is a member of the Clinical Ethics Committee of the Southeast LHD

Susan holds a Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery UNSW, a Masters of Health Law, USYD, a Masters of Bioethics, USYD and is a Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine.

Having worked in the medicolegal environment of Avant Mutual, Susan has a unique insight into medical error, medical misadventure and the impact this has on doctors, patients and their families and she is passionate about sharing this insight to make practicing medicine safer for consumers and providers.
