Minimising Risk, Optimising Care
Welcome to the 3rd meeting of High Risk Emergency Medicine Australia
Dear Colleagues,
The Organising Committee warmly welcomes you to the 3rd High Risk Emergency Medicine Meeting in Australia. This conference focuses on the situations and presentations in emergency medicine that carry the highest stakes—where the risks of misdiagnosis, adverse outcomes, or medico-legal challenges weigh heavily on clinicians.
Our program is tailored to practising emergency medicine specialists, trainees, diploma candidates, career medical officers, and nurse practitioners who regularly encounter high-risk situations in their practice.
This year’s meeting delves into clinical scenarios and care models that challenge more than just medical knowledge. We will address key medico-legal issues inherent in emergency medicine, including:
- Involuntary treatment dilemmas.
- End-of-life decision-making and voluntary assisted dying legislation
- The role of guidelines to support clinical decision making.
Other topics include:
- Case-based discussions of high risk presentations in adult and paediatric medicine
- The rise of private emergency medicine and telehealth
- Resuscitation at the edge of evidence.
- Risks associated with novel therapies.
We will explore the broader consequences of adverse events for clinicians, including root cause analyses, litigation, coronial investigations, and disciplinary proceedings.
Our distinguished faculty from New South Wales and Victoria, alongside nationally acclaimed experts in medicine and law, will guide you through a rich program of real case studies, lived experiences, and legal analyses to deal with the unique challenges of high-risk emergency medicine.
We look forward to an engaging and insightful meeting, and hope you’ll join us.
Warm regards,
Dr Susan Hertzberg
